Testing Accretion Disk Theory in Black Hole X-ray Binaries

چکیده
We present results from spectral modeling of three black hole X-ray binaries: LMC X-3, GRO J1655-40, and XTE J1550-564. Using a sample of disk dominated observations, we fit the data with a range of spectral models that includes a simple multitemperature blackbody (DISKBB), a relativistic accretion disk model based on color-corrected blackbodies (KERRBB), and a relativistic model based on non-LTE atmosphere models within an α prescription (BHSPEC). BHSPEC provides the best fit for a BeppoSAX observation of LMC X-3, which has the broadest energy coverage of our sample. It also provides the best fit for multiple epochs of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) data in this source, except at the very highest luminosity (L/LEdd & 0.7), where additional physics must be coming into play. BHSPEC is also the best-fit model for multi-epoch RXTE observations of GRO J1655-40 and XTE J1550-564, although the best-fit inclination of the inner disk differs from the binary inclination. All our fits prefer α = 0.01 to α = 0.1, in apparent disagreement with the large stresses inferred from the rapid rise times observed in outbursts of these two sources. In all three sources our fits imply moderate black hole spins (a∗ ∼ 0.1− 0.8), or lower if there is a significant stress at the last stable orbit. Black Hole Spin in X-ray Binaries: Observational Consequences
We discuss the observational consequences of black hole spin in X-ray binaries within the framework of the standard thin accretion disk model. When compared to theoretical flux distribution from the surface of a thin disk surrounding a Kerr black hole, the observed X-ray properties of the Galactic superluminal jet sources, GRO J1655-40 and GRS 1915+105, strongly suggest that each contains a bla...
متن کاملInclination Effects and Beaming in Black Hole X-ray Binaries
We investigate the dependence of observational properties of black hole Xray binaries on the inclination angle i of their orbits. We find the following: (1) Transient black hole binaries show no trend in their quiescent X-ray luminosities as a function of i, suggesting that the radiation is not significantly beamed. This is consistent with emission from an accretion disk. If the X-rays are from...
متن کاملInferring the Inclination of a Black Hole Accretion Disk from Observations of its Polarized Continuum Radiation
Spin parameters of stellar-mass black holes in X-ray binaries are currently being estimated by fitting the X-ray continuum spectra of their accretion disk emission. For this method, it is necessary to know the inclination of the X-rayproducing inner region of the disk. Since the inner disk is expected to be oriented perpendicular to the spin axis of the hole, the usual practice is to assume tha...
متن کاملEffects of Magnetic Fields on the Diskoseismic Modes of Accreting Black Holes
The origin of the rapid quasi-periodic variabilities observed in a number of accreting black hole X-ray binaries is not understood. It has been suggested that these variabilities are associated with diskoseismic oscillation modes of the black hole accretion disk. In particular, in a disk with no magnetic field, the so-called g-modes (inertial oscillations) can be self-trapped at the inner regio...
متن کاملStudying the Properties of Accretion Disks and Coronae in Black Hole X-ray Binaries with Monte-Carlo Simulation
Understanding the properties of the hot corona is important for studying the accretion disks in black hole X-ray binary systems. Using the Monte-Carlo technique to simulate the inverse Compton scattering between photons emitted from the cold disk and electrons in the hot corona, we have produced two table models in the XSPEC format for the spherical corona case and the disk-like (slab) corona c...
